Health benefits of brewer's yeast

Posted by Mohamed Alsayed on

Nutrient beer yeast has been shown to maintain low homocysteine levels; reduce triglycerides and increase high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels while reducing low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels, help control blood sugar levels, protect against liver cancer and help eliminate acne.

By serving as an excellent source of all B vitamins, brewer's yeast maintains homocysteine levels low. Much of the research has shown a very strong association between high blood levels of homocysteine - an amino acid that is an intermediate product created during an essential cellular process called methylation - and cardiovascular disease and some forms of cancer .

Beer yeast or  brewer's yeast also helps reduce triglycerides and increase HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) while reducing LDL (bad cholesterol) cholesterol. In one study, a group of 11 men with normal cholesterol and 16 men with high cholesterol received 20g of beer yeast with a high chromium content per day.

After eight weeks, not only did HDL cholesterol increase from 5 to 6 mg / dL in both groups, but in 84% of the cases, the cholesterol / HDL ratio improved significantly.

brewer's yeast can also be an excellent source of selenium. In addition, selenium in brewer's yeast is almost entirely in the form of selenomethionine, an organic form in which selenium is complexed with a molecule of amino acid methionine and which studies have shown is more bioavailable than non-organic forms of this mineral.

Selenium is a necessary component of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase, essential for protecting the liver from the free radicals created during the detoxification process. In addition, this enzyme activated by selenium protects cell membranes against oxidative damage, which can lead to premature aging of cells throughout the body.
