What Does Beer Yeast Do?

Posted by Mohamed Alsayed on
Beer yeast has been used as a nutritional supplement long ago , but what properties make it so popular and who can benefit from it?

What Is Beer Yeast?

Beer yeast is so called because it`s being used as an ingredient in beer making. Its official real name is Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and this unicellular fungus is also specifically grown to be transformed into a nutritional supplement.

Beer yeast is rich in chromium, among other nutrients. Chromium has been known to play a useful role in stabilizing glucose levels in the blood and thus could be useful in managing diabetes. However, research giving beer or chrome yeast supplements to older adults proved that these supplements were effective in increasing the level of chromium in the blood but had no effect on blood glucose control.

Diabetes UK considers that it is better to get essential minerals and vitamins in foods rather than taking a supplement and states that people with diabetes should not see supplements as a substitute for prescribed medications.

Beer yeast is also rich in selenium, a mineral essential for antioxidant benefits, and perhaps protection against heart disease by promoting the production of 'good' HDL cholesterol and reducing bad cholesterol.

It is also a good source of complex B vitamins, including B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B9 (folic acid) and biotin essential to provide energy, support the nervous system, promote proper digestion and keep the skin, hair, eyes and liver in perfect condition.

It is a nutritional myth that brewer's yeast is a rich source of vitamin B12 - this is not the case. In nature, brewer's yeast naturally grows next to bacteria that can make B12, but the purified forms of yeast found in supplement pills are B12 free. Some supplements are enriched with B12, listed on the ingredient label.

Other Potential Uses of beer yeast

Beer yeast can be modified to help deliver vaccines designed to reduce the risk of skin cancer (but this research is still at an early stage) . it`s used to improve acne and even prevent colds and flu. Further studies and wider studies should be conducted before these preliminary results can be verified.
