What Is Beer Yeast?

Beer yeast is so called because it`s being used as an ingredient in beer making. Its official real name is Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and this unicellular fungus is also specifically grown to be transformed into a nutritional supplement.

Beer yeast is rich in chromium, among other nutrients. Chromium has been known to play a useful role in stabilizing glucose levels in the blood and thus could be useful in managing diabetes. However, research giving beer or chrome yeast supplements to older adults proved that these supplements were effective in increasing the level of chromium in the blood but had no effect on blood glucose control.

In one study, a group of 11 men with normal cholesterol and 16 men with high cholesterol received 20g of beer yeast with a high chromium content per day.

ٍScientists dicovered that Brewer's yeast might have a positive effects on insulin receptors due to its glucose tolerance factor in people with type 2 diabetes. The study was conducted to find out the effects of brewer's yeast supplements on glycemic indices for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

After a randomized double-blind controlled clinical trial, 84 adults (21 men and 63 women) aged 46.3 ± 6.1 years old with type 2 diabetes mellitus were recruited then divided in a random way into two groups: Supplement group receiving brewer's yeast (six 300mg tablets/day, total 1800 mg) and control group receiving placebo (six 300mg tablets/day) for 12 weeks.

It`s better to Avoid it in case of those with impaired immunity (eg during chemotherapy), active inflammatory bowel disorders (such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), the very young and the very old.
