ٍScientists dicovered that Brewer's yeast might have a positive effects on insulin receptors due to its glucose tolerance factor in people with type 2 diabetes. The study was conducted to find out the effects of brewer's yeast supplements on glycemic indices for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

After a randomized double-blind controlled clinical trial, 84 adults (21 men and 63 women) aged 46.3 ± 6.1 years old with type 2 diabetes mellitus were recruited then divided in a random way into two groups: Supplement group receiving brewer's yeast (six 300mg tablets/day, total 1800 mg) and control group receiving placebo (six 300mg tablets/day) for 12 weeks.

Body weight, height, body mass index, food consumption (based on 24h food record), fasting blood sugar (FBS), glycosylated hemoglobin, insulin sensitivity, and insulin resistance were measured before and after the intervention.

The result noticed was The changes in FBS, glycosylated hemoglobin, and insulin sensitivity were significantly different between the two groups during the study .

A considerable difference in FBS was detected, glycosylated hemoglobin, and insulin sensitivity at the end of the study between the two groups .

The changes in body mass index, 24h food record, insulin resistance were not important.

Scientists concluded that dietary supplementation with brewer`s yeast along with patient usual treatment of diabetes can improve blood glucose variables in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Brewer`s yeast
Brewer's yeast

Everybody knows Brewer`s yeast it's a great and popular nutritional supplement

What do you know about brewer's yeast?

People use that name because it is an basic ingredient in beer-making. The official name of Brewer's yeast is Saccharomyces cerevisiae it's easier to call it Brewer's yeast isn't it ?  its a single celled fungus that are specifically grown to be used as a nutritional supplement.

How does brewer's yeast act?

Brewer's yeast and selenium

Brewer`s yeast is rich in selenium too , selenium is known as an essential mineral for antioxidant benefits, selenium is encouraging the production of 'good' HDL cholesterol and reducing levels of 'bad' (LDL) cholesterol so it`s also possibly offering a good protection against heart disease

Brewer's yeast and chromium

Brewer`s yeast is very rich in chromium amongst many other nutrients. Chromium plays a useful role in stabilization of blood-glucose levels so this made it useful in managing diabetes but it's not  a replacement for prescribed medication at all.

Tip
research giving supplements of brewer's yeast or chromium to elderly adults proved both these supplements effective in raising blood chromium levels - but with no effect on blood sugar control.

Brewer`s yeast and B-complex vitamins

Brewer`s yeast is a useful source of B-complex vitamins, including B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B9 (folic acid), and biotin, these vitamins are very essential to provide body with energy, support our nervous system, it can also help for a good digestion and make our skin, hair, eyes and liver in a great condition.

People think that it's a rich source of vitamin B12 - this is a myth. In nature, the purified forms of Brewer's yeast found in supplement pills are B12 free. But some supplements are fortified with B12 as an addition

potential uses

Some studies say that Brewer's yeast can be modified in order to help deliver vaccines that reduce the risk of skin cancer, improve acne and even prevent colds and flu but it's early for these studies  to be proven as a fact.

Is it safe for everybody to take it?

People suffering from atopic dermatitis should avoid yeast supplements as they may worsen this skin condition.

It's not known whether brewer's yeast has any impact on pregnancy or breastfeeding and children
so it's better not to use it

You should avoid brewer's yeast supplements if you have gout as the high purine content increases blood uric acid levels and potential for gout flare-up.
